Centered on the lives of a group of high school students as they try to navigate school and romantic entanglements, "10 Things I Hate About You" is a great back-to-school pick. And who could forget the scene where Kat Stratford emotionally presents her poem, for which the film gets its title, in front of her class? Plus, it's a movie my husband and I can both agree upon.
10 Things I Hate About You is afunny and sweet high school movie that I enjoyed. The storyline is just omay, I enjoyed the characters a lot but the main plot seems done before and cliche, but I still had fun. The cast was really good, Heath Ledger is always a joy to watch, and Joseph Gordon Levitt is such a sweet guy thats its hard not to love him. The comedy was good, I laughed many times espically at Larry Miller as thedad, but it was not nearly as funny as it couldve been.

The lack of Shakespearean dialogue is a welcome touch, as it makes the movie far more comprehensible and charming than other modernized Shakespeare adaptations (coughROMEO+JULIETcough). Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles are both fantastic in the roles that elevated them to stardom, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is good as well despite being overshadowed a little by Ledger and Stiles. It can be a little predictable at times, but 10 Things I Hate About You has enough poignant moments, humor, and great acting to make it a memorable and very enjoyable romantic comedy. The film is remembered for more than serving as a breeding ground for a new generation of stars.

The high school romance genre has become so popular that it's running out of new ideas and has taken to recycling classic literature. Janney's role as the high school guidance counselor who is more focused on writing her erotic novel than on her students was one in a long list of more than 130 acting credits to date. On the small screen, the seven-time Emmy Award-winning actress is known for playing C.J.
More recently, Janney earned an Academy Award for her turn as Tonya Harding's mom in I, Tonya. In 2019, the notoriously private star appeared in the critically acclaimed film Bombshell. He's been married to producer Eileen Conn, with whom he has two children, since 1993. While Covington sought a "reimagined" adaptation, there are several connections between the pilot and movie, which gave the pilot the same feel. Gil Junger, who directed the movie, also directed the pilot and served as series consultant.
Richard Gibbs, who was credited for the original music in the 1999 movie, also composed the theme music for the pilot. In addition, Larry Miller reprised his role as the overprotective father, Walter Stratford. A cover of I Want You to Want Me by Cheap Trick was recorded by KSM. A music video was shot which featured members of the cast with KSM. Throughout the movie, Michael comes out with some fantastic one-liners and that makes him one of the best characters overall. He is kind and even gets his own love life scene as well, putting in a huge romantic gesture to make it happen.
But it's the fact he is a genuine scene-stealer that makes him one of the strongest characters. 10 Things I Hate About You is an iconic teen romantic comedy and a major reason why is the fantastic cast of characters involved. After the reporter pointed out that Julia and Joe, who are now both 40, don't share many scenes in the film, the filmmaker agreed.
"I know, right? Isn't that funny? She's, like, professing her love to Heath, and she's in love with the guy who's waiting in his trailer to shoot the next scene," Gil marveled. "Yeah, but watching them, it was beautiful how much they enjoyed each other." It was filled with classic 1990s hits, and throughout the film, the band Letters to Cleowas featured live in several scenes, including at the concert Kat attends and at the school prom. The movie benefits from appealing performers and some genuinely fresh and funny dialogue.
Comedian Larry Miller is terrific as the girls' father, overprotective because their mother abandoned the family and because as an obstetrician he sees too many pregnant teenagers. But they're also helped out tremendously by the power of a great ensemble cast. Every line Allison Janney utters as the oversexed, over-her-job guidance counselor is pure gold, and we've already discussed Daryl Mitchell's exasperated English teacher. Larisa Oleynik and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are adorably over-earnest as the B romance in a sea of teen actors all playing their parts to the hilt. (Shoutout to Joey's model poses.) And even with all that, the line that gets me every time is David Leisure as Mr. Chapin stealing detention Cheetos for himself with a simple, "This too." His line delivery here is perfection. It seems very timely that HBO was playing this today- on it's 20th Anniversary.
Of course, I had to watch it while I was getting ready for work. Since this is a rewatch , I'm kind of embarrassed to admit that I know most of the dialogues here- I can even recite Kat's lines! This is a "terribly underrated" movie and I still love it 20 years after- I still fell for Heath and JGL, for the music, for all the clichés, the fun and all the 90s aesthetics. Kat might not have any interest in romance at the start of the movie, but she does end up falling for Patrick.
Kat is someone who will do whatever is needed, from flashing her teacher to get Patrick out of detention to dancing how she wants during a party, all of which helps to make her a great character to watch. She improves massively as a person throughout the movie, letting down her guard to showcase the real her with Cameron. Bianca is a great personality and plays the stereotypical high school sweetheart that everyone adores perfectly, coming out with some tremendous one-liners at different points. Mandella is in a similar situation to Chastity in the sense that she doesn't have that much of an impact on the movie overall. She plays the same role as Chastity, except she is the best friend of Bianca's sister, Kat.
They're far kinder and more quirky, which is what makes Mandella a more appealing character. Junger said it only took Stiles a single take to shoot the poem scene, and that he himself was "crying so hard" by the end of it. "That was maybe one of the most moving performances I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty," he said. "It just killed me. It was so raw, and it was so honest, and it was so vulnerable. I even asked her — I said, 'Where did that come from?' And she told me, 'I was just thinking about' — that person's name that she was deeply in love with at the time."
It turns out that like any good actor, Stiles was pulling from a real place of love, but not for her co-star Ledger. The cult film's director, Gil Junger, recently told Fede Carestía on his YouTube channel, Mirá a Quién Encontré, that Stiles was thinking of a different co-star — Joseph Gordon-Levitt, while filming the pivotal scene. "The movie has such cult status that it seems almost sacrilege to tamper with it for television, but as a series 10 Things is not terrible; it is even at times fun. It's just not very inventive," wrote theNew York Times' Alessandra Stanley in her review at the time.
"We're all arranged on top of this postage-stamp-sized roof with chicken wire the only thing protecting us from toppling to our deaths into the Puget Sound," Hanley, who went on to provide Rachael Leigh Cook's singing voice inJosie and the Pussycats, told the New York Times. "I would never have the guts to do that now," Stiles said. "If I'm really honest, I didn't want to do a high school romantic comedy," Gordon-Levitt admitted to the Times. "I wanted to do Sundance movies. I'm very lucky that five years later, I got to do that. The truth is, I was a naïve or stuck-up 17-year-old."
"We knew we wanted to write a teen movie and whenCluelesscame out, we thought Amy Heckerling was a genius for contemporizing a classic [Jane Austen's Emma], so we decided to try that as well," McCullah told The Script Lab in 2015. "We choseTaming of the Shrewand figured out which story lines we wanted to keep and update and how we'd go about it and then outlined all the characters and the story while we sat on a beach in Mexico." I liked the movie's spirit, the actors and some of the scenes. The music, much of it by the band Letters to Cleo, is subtle and inventive while still cheerful. The movie almost but not quite achieves liftoff against the gravitational pull of the tired story formula.
Sometimes it's a mistake to have acting this charming; the characters become so engaging and spontaneous, we notice how they're trapped in the plot. All teenage movies have at least one boring and endless party scene, in which everyone is wildly dressed, drunk and relentlessly colorful (in "Never Been Kissed,'' some of the kids come as the Village People). These scenes inevitably involve a fight, barfing, and a tearful romantic breakup in front of everybody. That scene was tedious, and so was a scene where the would-be lovers throw paint balloons at each other. I know there has to be a scene of carefree, colorful frolic, but as I watched them rubbing paint in each other's hair, I began to yearn for that old standby, the obligatory Tilt-a-Whirl ride.

I adopted what is turning out to be a lifetime aversion to Ernest Hemingway ("an abusive, alcoholic misogynist who squandered half of his life hanging around Picasso trying to nail his leftovers"). I started going to punk and hardcore shows at my local community center. My high school had a dress code, so instead of wearing long-sleeved crop tops and cargo pants to class, I began to wear knee-high black boots every day under my khakis .
More crucially, I began to express my opinions—freely, loudly—even when they were unpopular, or worse, unladylike. I entered what my father once called "the cult of witty remarks." When I myself was groped, my breasts grabbed not in the lunch line but in front of the school, by the flagpole, I didn't kick the groper in the balls—but I did hit him in the face so hard he cried. Throughout the film, Kat puts up a front of being fearless. Her character is meant to be strong, resilient, and independent, and she was a role model for anyone aspiring to be all three.
